Saxon draws endorsement, praise from Jackson County Newspapers

Athens, GA - Congressional candidate Bobby Saxon drew an endorsement and praise today from two major newspapers in his home county of Jackson, the Commerce News and the Jackson Herald.

The Commerce News, which officially endorsed Saxon, stated that he would be a "a vast improvement over incumbent Paul Broun." In explaining their endorsement, the paper stated that Broun has been "virtually useless in Washington" and "has little to say or do about issues that affect life here in Georgia."

While the Jackson Herald did not officially endorse in this race, their words of praise for Saxon were just as loud. According to the Mike Buffington, editor of the Jackson Herald, "Washington needs more moderate voices like Saxon, leaders who aren't in an ideological straight jacket."

Saxon, a Jackson County native, has had a strong week of endorsements so far. On Tuesday he received a ringing endorsement from the normally conservative Athens Banner-Herald.

Athens, GA - Today, the Athens Banner-Herald officially endorsed conservative Democrat Bobby Saxon as the congressional candidate best able to help the 10th District through these tough economic times.

The paper has traditionally endorsed Republican candidates for major office, including an endorsement of Congressman Paul Broun just 15 months ago. In this case, however, they justified their decision by citing Saxon's Iraq war experience, as well as his ability to communicate to a "powerful effect."

In the endorsement, the paper stated, "This is no time for the sloganeering and assorted other partisan cheap shots that have come to define the civic discourse in this country; it's a time for people who can lift the political process out of those sorry depths".

In the only debate Congressman Broun agreed to appear in, the paper stated that Broun "came off sounding like a monologue from a fringe candidate". They added, "In the one chance he gave voters to see, head-to-head with his challenger, whether he was up to meeting the challenges of this sobering hour in American history, Broun failed, and failed miserably."

In the closing for their endorsement of Saxon, the paper stated, "The best choice in the 10th Congressional District race could hardly be clearer. It's Bobby Saxon."

Paul Broun misleading voters on his Military record - 10/27/2008

Athens, GA - Last night, Bobby Saxon, candidate for the 10th Congressional District, called out his opponent, Paul Broun, for misleading voters about his military service. Broun has consistently referred to himself as a “pre-Vietnam” Marine, though he served in the Marine Reserves in 1964.

A video was posted by the Saxon campaign on Youtube with Broun’s own words confirming his statements.

When given the opportunity to correct his statements, Paul Broun said, “the thing is, I joined the Marine Corps reserves in early 1964. Vietnam wasn’t even an issue.”

The truth: 206 service members died in Vietnam in 1964. By the time Congressman Broun finished his "pre-Vietnam" service nearly 20,000 United States service members had perished in Vietnam.

"As an active member of the Georgia Army National Guard I have a deep respect for reserve service. I'm not questioning Congressman Broun's service. I'm questioning why he has repeatedly misled the voters about the years he served. He acts like the 206 Americans that died fighting for this country during his first year of "pre-Vietnam" service were insignificant. It is shameless that he would dishonor the sacrifice of these brave patriots" Saxon said.

Small businesses, retired people, home owners, realtors, building contractors, community banks, and many others are being harmed by this crisis. Unlike Wall Street, they have done nothing wrong and you must vote to ensure they are not punished for believing in the American dream.

Today, the US Commerce Department reported that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) rose 3.3 % in the last quarter. The increase is attributed largely to the Economic Stimulus package signed into law last February. Paul Broun, representative of the 10th District, voted against the bill. Bobby Saxon had the following to say:

“This news again indicates that Mr. Broun was on the wrong side of an important issue for the voters of the 10th district. The Economic Stimulus package passed in the House of Representatives with greater than 90% approval. An overwhelming majority of Congress clearly understood that Americans needed help, but not Paul Broun.

“Congressman Broun has consistently proven that he fails to understand the basics of fiscal responsibility. He votes against giving the taxpayers of the 10th district their money back but he has no issue wasting their money to fund his campaign and his personal agenda. This bill was written in response to the catastrophic bridge collapse in Minneapolis, Minnesota that occurred one year ago today and killed thirteen people."

ATHENS, GA – It looks like some political pundits need help remembering that Georgia’s election season doesn’t end in July.

In a July 17 article of the Wall Street Journal called “Dr. Broun Goes Back to Washington,” columnist John Fund writes, “Dr. Broun will be going back to Washington next year, having won 71% in last night's primary.” There is no mention of Bobby Saxon or his November challenge against Congressman Broun.

“If Mr. Fund had done some research before he wrote this article, he’d have realized that I carried eight counties against both Representative Fleming AND Congressman Broun," said Saxon. "In five of those counties, I carried more votes than my two opponents put together. Last Tuesday, 18,000 Republicans showed they were disappointed enough by Congressman Broun’s performance to vote against their sitting incumbent. That’s not a small number, and definitely not one that the media should be ignoring in a democracy where every vote counts.

“Folks still have nearly four months to make up their minds on their own. We don’t need the Washington establishment and big-shot political pundits pressuring people on how to vote, and we definitely don’t need a Wall Street Journal writer already declaring our next Congressman before anyone has a say.

“I invite Mr. Fund to call me before he writes anymore articles about the 10th district of Georgia. We can discuss my desire to solve real problems in this district in a responsible and bipartisan way.”

ATHENS, GA - Bobby Saxon, candidate for Georgia's 10th Congressional District, released the following statement in response to Representative Paul Broun, Jr.'s vote against the President's tax relief package, signed into law on February 13.

“Once again, Dr. Broun has demonstrated that he is out of touch with our district and our values, but what should we expect from a congressman who continually votes against our children. President Bush's tax rebate plan will return hundreds of dollars to the average Georgia family at a critical time for our nation's economy. Our congressman, however, seems more concerned with self-promotion rather than supporting fiscally responsible policies in the form of healthy tax relief.”

“Now is the time for taxpayers to be spending more of their own money as opposed to having the government spend it for them. When I'm elected, I'll fight for refunds when they're needed most, and ensure that our tax dollars are spent in the most intelligent and responsible ways possible.”

10th district congressional candidate responds to Congressman's lack of interest in GA's children.

Athens, GA. – Bobby Saxon, candidate for Georgia’s Tenth Congressional District, released the following statement in response to U.S. Representative Paul Broun Jr.’s visit to Stevens Creek Elementary. While visiting the Augusta area school, Broun expressed his enthusiasm about a Spanish instruction program badly in need of funding, but made no statements about further financial support.

“With respect to Dr. Broun, his record in Congress has been scarred by disinterest and hypocrisy regarding the youth of our state. By voting against the expansion of S-CHIP and failing to provide an effective alternative to No Child Left Behind, Dr. Broun has made it clear that his personal agenda in Washington has priority over the welfare of Georgia’s children.

“By making misleading statements without the promise of real action to those educating our children, he is giving false hope to a Congressional district badly in need of good leadership. When I’m elected, I will be the Congressman of action, not of talk. I will put work behind my words, and strive to put funding where our children need it most. When I’m elected, I will fight the real fight for our children and our values.”
